Geraldine kicked butt on the HVAC certification test that she needed in order to become certified by the state, and she expected to walk out and into a top paying job at her dad’s shop, Gerry’s HVAC.
Gerry had news for her though.
She was going to have to start as an intern. It would be a paid internship, but still an internship nonetheless. Geraldine didn’t think it was fair, but he showed her that every employee he had began as an intern. It was fair. What would not be fair would be for Geraldine to walk right into HVAC technician status right away. His other a/c crew would be ticked off about that, and he didn’t want a mutiny on his hands. So, Geraldine became her dad’s intern, and essentially her job was to go out on as many HVAC calls as possible and watch and learn from the long-time a/c technicians her dad employed. She thought she was going to hate it, but she actually enjoyed her time as an a/c technician intern; she got to experience a lot without having the pressure of being responsible for everything that happened on the call. The customers got to know her, and when they learned she was Gerry’s daughter, they thought it was great that she would be working in HVAC right alongside her father. Just about every time, one of the a/c techs would try to trick her. They would always ask her what they thought the problem was if someone’s a/c wouldn’t kick on or the furnace was blowing cold air, or whatever. She was able to figure it out most of the time and got a kick out of it when they tried to trip her up.
